Being Social While We Social Distance

Abigail Palotas

Welcome back, Knights! Hopefully your semester has been off to a good start, especially as we reach the end of the first round of exams. Following the stress of studying and adapting to the many new policies and procedures around campus, it is important to remember that college is not only about academics, but also about social growth and connection. While it may be a little more difficult to participate in fun social activities this semester, and likely this entire school year, there are still plenty of ways to spend time with friends safely. Here’s a list of some fun activities in the area:

1. On-campus events- The Activities Programming Board (APB) as well as the Honors Events, Wellness, and TED Talk Committees host frequent activities right here on campus as well as in Erie, in which case transportation is provided. Whether it’s biking at Presque Isle, watching a live music or comedy performance, or making crafts, you and your friends are sure to have a great time at one of APB’s events. And Honors-sponsored events are perfect for cultivating friendships with like-minded peers, whether it be through a casual game of frisbee or an in-depth discussion following a TED Talk.

2. Mini golf- Harborview Miniature Golf, right on State Street by the Bayfront (36 State St, Erie, PA 16507) is a great place for a quick, fun, socially-distant round of golf!

3. Hiking- From Wintergreen Gorge and Headwaters Park, to Asbury Woods, there are a number of wonderful hiking trails in the Erie area to explore!

4. The beach!- whether you want to relax on the beach, swim in the lake, walk or bike along the trails, fish off the shore, kayak, or paddleboard, you are sure to find fun at Presque Isle!

5. Waldameer & Water World- enjoy a socially-distant day at Waldameer’s amusement park or Water World

6. The Erie Zoo- it may seem like a blast from the past, but you can enjoy observing and learning about animals, and you can hop on the train for a ride around the park!

7. Tom Ridge Environmental Center- learn about Presque Isle and its wildlife. AND, work on that EBE lab from Dr. Ropski!

8. Take a walk!- just around campus, through Perry Square, or down to Bicentennial Tower!

We hope you’ll find time to enjoy one another’s company this semester. Just remember to follow social distancing guidelines and keep wearing your mask. We want to be here all semester, so each of us must do our part to keep our beloved Gannon Family safe and healthy!
