Cool for the Summer

Brianna Barr

While interviewing a few beloved honors professors, one intriguing question lies eminent. How did you spend your summer vacation? What’s the scoop among these five professors?

Did they spend their vacation voyaging the adventurous unknown or preparing for the upcoming semester?

Dr. Caulfield kickstarted his summer fun by teaching a Calculus 1 class. Later, he made the adventurous journey to Ohio and reunited with family he hadn’t seen since pre-Covid. There, Dr. Caulfield and his family experienced “Hill Camping.”

Dr. Darling answered with complete and utter admiration about his wife, who was gone for the summer as an Athletic Trainer for the Olympics. Dr. Darling had to play both Mom and Dad this summer with summer homework and projects for the children. The Darling family ended summer the right way by helping Grandma move to Myrtle Beach and fitting in some vacation time.

Dr. Giles finished off the manuscript for his book, which allowed him to spend the rest of his summer fly fishing, rebuilding a sailboat, and playing Grandpa. Dr. Giles embraced the adventurous role of Grandfather with Bigfoot hunting, playing pirates, sailing, fishing, and searching for toads and salamanders. He happily finished his summer by sitting around a campfire holding his wife’s hand.

Dr. Gonwa’s exciting summer started off with heading to South Carolina to celebrate her parents’ 40th Anniversary and reconnect with family. Near the end of June, Dr. Gonwa flew to Madrid for an academic conference on both science and theology.

Dr. Moodey’s priority for the summer was moving his sociology class online, which was, “one of the hardest things in his teaching career.” He spent the Fourth of July at his daughter’s boyfriend’s house where the fun activity of tubing commenced. Dr. Moodey stated he was just an observer of the activity. To conclude the summer, Dr. Moodey’s son performed some manual labor on a house they bought before the pandemic.

Although our professors may not be secret scuba divers or adrenaline seekers, they do know how to make a summer memorable by traveling, spending time with family, and yes, working.
