Love is in the Air... and in the Trees

Hill Leonard

February, the month of chocolate, flowers, and hanging poetry from trees. That last one probably caught you off guard. Perhaps it gave you an idea for that special someone in your life.

Dr. Holbrook, a professor in our very own history department, spends her love day with her husband in a way that seems to be out of a movie. Every year, she buys her husband a giant Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. One year, as Dr. Holbrook was setting it out in the morning, she caught a glimpse of what her husband was up to: He was attaching poetry to the branches of a hawthorn tree.

What makes this act seem to glow with adoration is the symbolism behind a hawthorn tree. The hawthorn tree is a symbol often seen in Celtic mythology, symbolizing love, unity, and protection.

Valentine’s day may not be for all, but none can deny the love between these Gannon lovebirds. Even after the sun sets on Cupid’s day, it is important to know that love is out there. Whether romantic or platonic, love is as plentiful as the branches on a tree. Perhaps someone is just waiting for you to reach out a branch.
