Avoid Cram Studying

Perfecting proper studying habits is a key method in not only having an accomplishing finals week, but to a successful semester as well. I am sure many have heard their professors iterate the importance of avoiding cram studying, and they tend to do this because it is true! According to Kaplan education company, studying for multiple 1-hour blocks throughout the week is more effective than a last minute 6-hour study session the night prior to a test. This method works best because it aids in avoiding harm to mental stamina and prevents the burnout mentioned earlier. So, make sure to carve out some time several days prior to your finals even if it is just for 30 minutes.

Utilize the Studying Tools

With the vast amount of technology available to students in today’s world it would make sense to use various resources on the internet for studying. For instance, the online tool Quizlet is a popular method for memorizing definitions and making flashcards. In addition, YouTube gives access to a huge library of videos and lectures. If certain concepts had not clicked earlier in the semester try hearing someone else discuss the topic at hand. Some professors give direction for students in terms of studying for finals week, so make sure to utilize that as well.

Get Organized

Another major source of stress during finals week is the feeling of being overwhelmed. On top of two cumulative exams, you might have to write a research paper or give a presentation. For this reason, it might help to plan out time for all of your upcoming assignments. This can simply mean plotting down time in a planner but may go a long way. The more organized and efficient you are the less likely stress will accumulate.

Take a Break

Studying is extremely important during finals week but giving yourself a break is as equally evident. Prioritize classes, studying, and doing assignments. However, make sure to divulge time in partaking in an activity or hobby. As Dr. Ropski always says: “Reward yourself with good weather after you have studied.” Erie is bound to have some nice weather so it is not a bad idea to get some fresh air. Overall, finals week can appear daunting at first, but there are several things that aid in preventing the stressful toll it can have on students.
