Thanksgiving Q&A with Honors Professors and Students

Abigail Palotas and Scott Zanella

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish and why?

Dr. Haggerty: “I really don’t have a favorite; I like everything.”

Dr. Giles: “My Mom – who is now 93 makes this walnut and raisin cake for Thanksgiving – as little kids we used to go out in the woods and collect walnuts (husk and shell them – quite a chore! – our hands would be stained for weeks). When we had enough my Mom would bake a cake and put it in a cellar way until Thanksgiving. We all knew the cake was there and the anticipation was great! Things have changed as we’ve gotten older and some of us are no longer here – but my Mom still makes this cake and it brings back such great memories for me.”

Dr. Hartnett: “That is like asking me to pick my favorite kid. I just can’t.”

Justin Johnson (Senior): “I’m more of a traditional guy, so nothing can beat stuffing for me on Thanksgiving.”

Ella Rasper (Sophomore): “My favorite Thanksgiving dish is the rolls. My family goes to my grandma’s house to help her prepare, and all of the kids helped by making the rolls. We dipped marshmallows in butter, rolled them through cinnamon sugar, and wrapped them in a croissant roll. Once baked, the rolls are so ooey-gooey from the marshmallow!”
